Channel Seven's much hyped new reality series Million Dollar Island has turned out to be a flop with fans.

After scoring 409,000 in the metro ratings on Monday for its premiere, viewers quickly deserted the Survivor-like series over the following two nights.

Created by the team behind Big Brother, the show, hosted by SAS Australia's Ant Middleton, managed to pull in a mere 273,000 viewers on Tuesday and Wednesday in the major centres.

Filmed in Malaysia, the format of the show sees 100 contestants compete for $1million in a survival game set on a remote island. 

Meanwhile, The Chase Australia gave Seven some ratings cheer on Wednesday, with the quiz show winning 545,000 fans in the country's major urban centres.

Home and Away, was also a good performer for the network, scoring a metro rating on Wednesday of 497,000.

Meanwhile, the ABC's public-service comedy satire Utopia continue to win big audience numbers, scoring a massive 557,00 viewers across the five major centres on Wednesday.

Starring funny man Rob Sitch, and set in the fictional offices of the Nation Building Authority, the hilarious half-hour hit series takes the mickey out of the inner workings of government. 

Over on Nine, globe trotting reality hit Travel Guides also scored big on Wednesday, winning an impressive metro rating of 632,000 viewers.

On ratings starved Channel 10, meanwhile, MasterChef Australia drew a solid 410,000 viewers in the major centres. 

It comes after Million Dollar Island copped flak from viewers on social media soon after it dropped on Monday.

One viewer complained on Twitter: 'Feels like an amateurish rip off version of Survivor'.

Another mused: 'How do these shows ever get commissioned? Channel Seven meeting: 'We'll have a bunch of people on an island, they'll do various tasks and there will be lots of backstabbing along the way.'

'Me: 'Oh you mean like Survivor, that program that already exists?' they added.

'Million Dollar Island is like if Survivor had zero compelling contestants across four consecutive seasons and the core gameplay mechanic was hoping someone else would quit,' said someone else.

'Survivor on steroids,' another social media user commented, 'It's just Survivor but with this many amount of players'.
