Today is the deadline for California Gov. Gavin Newsom to release his tax returns.

The California governor and 2028 Democratic presidential frontrunner vowed that by July 31, 2026, he would release his personal tax returns after months of mounting pressure and increasingly uncomfortable questions about the source of his wealth.

As of publication, he has not released the returns.

In July 2019, Newsom signed the “Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act” designed to force President Donald Trump to release his tax returns as a condition of appearing on California’s primary ballot.

“These are extraordinary times and states have a legal and moral duty to do everything in their power to ensure leaders seeking the highest offices meet minimal standards,” Newsom said at the time.

That law was later struck down by the California Supreme Court. Newsome himself had not released a full tax return since taking office.

RedState reporter Jennifer Van Laar spent years covering Newsom’s finances.

“The ONLY time he released full tax returns to ALL journalists and the public was for his re-elect, and even then we didn’t get his 2021 returns because he waited until October,” Van Laar wrote on X in July. “Before that he allowed select journalists to view the returns for a brief amount of time in his office and wouldn’t allow them to take photos. That is NOT transparency.”

When asked about his own tax returns in July, Newsom’s response was to attack.

“I mean, this is purely political,” Newsom said. “People have stated pretty clearly they were directed to find something. Just directed, find something. That says everything you need to know about the United States of America under Donald Trump.”

The tax return scandal comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Newsom. A federal investigation has ensnared his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom after it was revealed her “nonprofit” woke organization, The Representation Project, paid her more than $1.9 million cash while also awarding $2.2 million in contracts to her other for-profit company.
