Former Vice President Kamala Harris built a career fighting racial bias in housing.

But her new zip code tells a much different story.

According to multiple reports, Harris has closed on an $8.15 million, 4,000-square-foot estate in Point Dume, the exclusive Malibu, CA area known for ocean views, private golf greens, and five-car garages.

However, according to Census Bureau data, the neighborhood is roughly 94% White and just 0.2% Black.

So much for being surrounded by diversity.

In a 2019 interview reflecting on her time at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Harris said her experience taught her about “numerosity”, including being surrounded by people who looked like her in a city “known forever as being ‘Chocolate City.'”

She’s now settling into a community where that kind of numerosity doesn’t exist.

Point Dume has also drawn scrutiny beyond its demographics. A 2025 review by non-White surfers described the area’s “veneer of a laid-back community of surfers” while accusing it of maintaining barriers that “keep most BIPOC people away” from its beaches.

The optics are hard to ignore given Harris’s record of fighting for diversity.

As California attorney general in 2012, she signed onto a Supreme Court brief defending the use of “disparate impact” claims under the Fair Housing Act, the legal theory that housing policies can be challenged as discriminatory even without explicit racial intent.

During her first presidential run in 2020, she rolled out a $100 billion plan aimed at families in historically redlined communities.

And as vice president, she championed Biden administration efforts to root out racial bias in home appraisals.

Today she owns a beachfront mansion in one of the whitest census tracts in the state.

This isn’t the first time Harris’s personal choices have collided with her political identity.

During her 2020 campaign, she faced questions over her Black identity given her Indian and Jamaican heritage and upbringing in mostly White enclaves.

The issue resurfaced during the 2024 presidential race when Donald Trump accused her of leaning on her Black identity for political advantage.

Harris also caught criticism in 2024 for claiming Oakland, CA as her hometown, despite spending most of her childhood in Berkeley — a far less diverse city — before moving as a teenager to Montreal, another predominantly White city.

Her husband, Doug Emhoff, is White as well.

The timing of Harris’ move also comes amid growing chatter that she’s eyeing a third White House run in 2028. Whether her new $8 million neighborhood becomes part of that story with voters remains to be seen.

Representatives for Harris have yet to comment at the time of publication.
