Celebration of life for legendary Flames voice Peter Maher set for Friday

The voice behind one of the most recognizable calls in Calgary sports history will echo one final time on Friday.

The Celebration of Life for legendary Calgary Flames broadcaster Peter Maher, The Final “Yeah Baby,” will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at First Alliance Church Calgary.

The news was met with a flood of grief from around Calgary and the hockey world. Maher was much more than a broadcaster.

His voice boomed from radio speakers during Flames games from the day the team moved from Atlanta to Calgary in 1980 and for 33 seasons after that. It was his voice on the air when the Flames won the Stanley Cup in 1989. He also called the team’s magical run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final and countless other memorable moments in franchise history.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to watch the service live on the day of the celebration. A recording will be posted afterward for those unable to watch live.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary, where Maher devoted nearly two decades of service.

Maher called six NHL all-star games, four Stanley Cup Finals, the 2005 IIHF World Championship and every Canadian men’s game at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

He was respected throughout the sports industry, earning induction into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 after receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his work as an NHL broadcaster.
