Ottawa police and firefighters evacuated Greely residents from their homes Tuesday night after a propane tanker truck crashed and overturned on its side on Parkway Road.

The Ottawa fire hazmat crew was sent to the scene of the single-vehicle collision — near the corner of Parkway Road and Cedar Lane — to monitor air quality and to assess risk from a propane leak.

Ottawa Fire Services, which had been notified of the collision just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 18, later said that the team “successfully mitigated the leak” and that the truck had been returned to its wheels.

“The tanker truck has been removed and all roads have reopened,” Ottawa Fire Services said in a social-media post.

Affected residents were able to return to their homes early Wednesday.

In a synopsis of the incident on Wednesday afternoon, Ottawa fire said the tanker had a capacity of 13,000 litres and was carrying about 7,000 litres at the time of the collision.

The leak was the result of a connection hose being partially sheared in the crash, it said.

One person was in the truck, but did not suffer serious injuries, Ottawa fire said.

The Greely Community Centre had been open as a reception centre for residents who had been evacuated from their homes.
