While the Senate is deeply divided ahead of President Trump's planned tariff announcement, the U.S. imposing tariffs that hit one country in particular has bipartisan support. 

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal on Tuesday announced new legislation on Tuesday that would slap 500 percent tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium or other products. 

The move is an effort to get Russia to engage in good faith negotiations to end the war in Ukraine as the Trump administration pushes for peace deal. 

The sanctions would be imposed if Russia refuses to work toward an agreement or initiates another effort such as military invasion.  

The senators signaled their proposed legislation against Russia has overwhelming bipartisan support. 

Besides Graham and Blumenthal, the bill has 48 other cosponsors in the Senate including a balance of Democrats and Republicans from across the country.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers are also introducing companion legislation in the House. 

'The dominating view in the United States Senate is that Russia is the aggressor, and that this horrific war and Putin’s aggression must end now and be deterred in the future,' Graham and Blumenthal wrote. 

They said they shared Trump's frustration with Russia when it comes to obtaining a ceasefire and support his desire to get a lasting peace. 

'It is our hope that in 2025, President Trump and his team will achieve what has eluded the world in the past: ending Russian aggression against Ukraine permanently and ensuring the survivability of a free and democratic Ukraine,' they said. 

They noted their sanctions against Russia are 'at the ready.' 

It comes after the president on Sunday expressed frustration as the fighting continued in Ukraine despite his vow to facilitate an end the the war quickly.

The president told NBC News he was 'pissed off' that Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's credibility.  

Trump insisted progress was being made in the negotiations, but he said that he would consider imposing further sanctions to put pressure on Moscow.
