A young woman was left bawling her eyes out after spending $300 at a high-end salon only to receive the worst haircut of her life. 

Olivia Day, from New York, visited the exclusive salon recommended by her friends for an edgy style upgrade - and what she actually received left thousands 'horrified'. 

She arrived at the salon sporting a soft bob with gentle layering and showed her stylist an image of a perfectly cropped cut that was her style inspiration.

But the hairdresser got the brief very wrong, with Olivia revealing an 'unbelievable' final look of spikey misshapen locks and a back and side view of coarsely cut layers. 

'It looks like I hacked it myself. Are you f***ing kidding me,' she said in a video.  

When the pained American asked her stylist if he could fix the cut, things only went from bad to worse as every snip of his scissors made her look worse. 

Olivia demanded a refund and left the salon as quickly as she could, racing home to try and salvage the style by fixing the crude layering herself.  

'Luckily I'm a lesbian so that helps ease the blow that I lost my hair to Edward Scissorhands,' she quipped, referencing the hit film starring Johnny Depp.

The New Yorker ended the video showing off a much improved style and said that she had managed to go from 'rizz to schizz' by fixing her head of hair herself. 

Olivia told FEMAIL that growing out the awful style has been 'quite a challenge'.

'But if I can get through that haircut, I can get through anything.'

Thousands of people reacted with shock at her dramatic reveal of the 'brutal' cut - with many saying that nothing prepared them for how bad it was. 

'I audibly gasped twice in this video,' one said.

'My jaw dropped, he did you so dirty,' another agreed.

'Girl, the front I was like maybe you can fix, but the back and the sides...', a third added with several crying emojis. 

Someone who visited the same salon shared their own horror story. 

'OMG been there, this guy was having a fight with his partner on the phone while angrily cutting my hair. And he was bouncing between three clients at one time, we were all too scared to cry or leave.'

But most people agreed that Olivia had become her 'own hero' and done an amazing job at salvaging her style. 

'I am a hairstylist and I cannot believe it! You saved it though,' one said. 

'The end result reminds me of 90's heartthrobs, you did a great job! Whoever did that hack job needs to be fired immediately,' another added.  

One woman said that Olivia's stunning features meant that she could pull off any look - no matter how awful. 

'On a happy note, you're so gorgeous any cut looks good on you.'
