WEST LOMBOK — A British tourist, Nicholas Irven, died after being swept away by a strong current while swimming at Kerandangan 2 Beach in Senggigi Village, Batulayar District, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Wednesday (August 19, 2026).

Irven was swimming with his wife and their three children when the incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. local time.

The family had reportedly been staying at Rinjani Esco Resort in Tanjung, North Lombok, before the incident.

“There were five foreign nationals from Britain who were swept away. Four survived, including the mother and three children,” Mataram Search and Rescue (SAR) spokesperson I Gusti Lanang Wiswananda said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Irven was missing underwater for around 18 minutes before he was found. According to Lanang, local residents from Krandangan and Mangsit villages joined the rescue effort.

Residents battled the waves using a jet ski and basic diving equipment to search for and evacuate the victim. Irven was eventually found unconscious and taken to Bhayangkara Hospital in Mataram.

He was later pronounced dead.

“According to the latest information, the victim was taken to Bhayangkara Hospital and was declared dead,” Lanang said.

Following the incident, police secured the area and coordinated with relevant authorities to handle the victim’s remains and assist his family.
