Amazon has announced a major expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery program, aiming to bring ultra-fast aerial shipments of small parcels to nearly 500 US cities by the end of the year. This initiative represents a sixfold increase in the logistics network’s current geographic coverage, marking a substantial acceleration in the commercial deployment of automated aerial transport.

Currently, Amazon Prime Air operates across 10 metropolitan areas supported by 11 active operational bases. The planned rollout targets several major metropolitan hubs, including Chicago and Atlanta, alongside new service areas such as Syracuse (New York), Cleveland (Ohio), and Boise (Idaho).

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) deployed in the program are engineered to transport lightweight payloads up to a maximum weight of 5 pounds (2.26 kg). Packages must fit within cargo dimensions comparable to a large shoebox. From a logistics standpoint, the primary operational goal is rapid fulfillment, with most automated orders scheduled to arrive at residential destinations within a 60-minute delivery window, and select shipments completing in under an hour.

The service features a tiered pricing model based on customer membership status and order totals:

• Amazon Prime Members: Eligible for free drone shipping on qualifying purchases totaling $50 or more. For orders below the $50 threshold, a reduced convenience fee of $3 per delivery applies.
• Non-Prime Customers: Subject to a standard flat delivery charge of $5 per order to utilize the rapid air transit option.

By scaling infrastructure across nearly 500 municipalities, Amazon aims to establish high-speed drone logistics as a practical daily delivery channel, reducing transit times for routine essentials, pharmaceuticals, and small consumer goods while optimizing last-mile delivery efficiency across the United States.
