According to the latest information from Apple collector and occasionally reliable leaker @Kosutami_Ito, the Apple Watch Series 12 will be available in a new material: ceramic. This aligns with reports from Bloomberg, which state that Apple is developing a smartwatch with a ceramic case. However, Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman has not yet been able to confirm whether this version will be released this year.

Ceramic isn’t an entirely new material for the Apple Watch. Most recently, the Apple Watch Series 5 was offered with a ceramic case. Since then, Apple has limited itself to aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. In the past, the Apple Watch “Edition” with a ceramic case was always offered with a glossy white finish. However, watches from other manufacturers with ceramic cases are available in a wide variety of colors, so a new finish is conceivable.

The ceramic-cased variant of the Apple Watch Series 5 weighed 39.7 grams or 46.7 grams, depending on size, comparable to the stainless steel version, and was thus significantly heavier than the aluminum or titanium models. The major advantage of ceramic for watch cases is that the material is extremely scratch-resistant by comparison. As the comparison test from Ben’s Watch Club embedded below shows, watches made of stainless steel or titanium get scratched much more quickly than those made of ceramic. However, it’s safe to assume that, as with the Apple Watch Series 5, the ceramic version will be significantly more expensive than the models with metal cases.
