The open-back reference headphones recreate the openness of listening to music with studio monitors to help music producers and musicians pinpoint instruments and performers while detecting flaws.

The Audio-Technica ATH-R30x is designed for hours of use during editing and performing thanks to a light 210 g (7.4 oz.) weight, replaceable velour earpads, and an adjustable headband. Its open-back earcup design ventilates moisture and heat, preventing buildup.

The headphones incorporate 40 mm drivers that recreate music with an open soundstage that delivers an "open, spacious and controlled presentation, bristling with crisp detail from top to bottom", according to What Hi-Fi?'s review. They are designed for high-power input up to 1,000 mW at 36 ohms, with a frequency range of 15 to 25,000 Hz.

As a con, the $169 Audio-Technica ATH-R50x (sold here on Amazon) offers even wider frequency reproduction across a 5 to 40,000 Hz range using larger 45 mm drivers. Also, neither will touch the sonic capability of high-end planar reference headphones such as the Audeze LCD-X (sold here on Amazon) at over seventeen times the price.
