Taiwan Turns to Rhode Island Startup for Affordable Underwater Swarm Defense Against China

Taiwan signed an MOU with U.S. startup Vatn Systems to field the modular Skelmir S12 AUV, develop AI command systems, and build local supply chains. The low-cost, torpedo-sized platform supports surveillance, mine countermeasures, and strike roles, bolstering asymmetric defenses in the Taiwan Strait. The deal reflects Taipei’s push for mass attritable systems amid rising tensions with Beijing.
