Google is rolling out an update to Google Maps on Android Auto that introduces battery level predictions and charging stop recommendations for more than 350 electric vehicle models. This feature is expanding to Android Auto after previously being available only for vehicles with Android Automotive, Google's built-in platform that operates independently of a connected phone.

Currently, the rollout is live in the United States and covers over 15 EV brands. Google has not specified which brands are included or provided a timeline for when support will be extended to additional vehicles.

What The New EV Battery Feature Does On Android Auto

Once a vehicle is added to Google Maps, the app shows estimated battery usage for a planned route. Users can input their current charge level to get suggested charging stops along the way, an estimated battery level at the destination, and an adjusted arrival time that accounts for charging time.

Google explains that the feature suggests "when and where to charge based on your EV model and battery level." These recommendations are generated directly within Google Maps, eliminating the need for a separate EV or charging network app.

How To Turn It On And Where It’s Available

To enable the feature, you need to add a vehicle to Google Maps before it becomes available on Android Auto. Here's how to set it up:

  1. Open Google Maps on your phone
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial
  3. Then navigate to Settings and select Your vehicles.
  4. Under Engine type, choose Electric.
  5. Tap Add vehicle under Vehicle, then enter the make, model, year, and trim.
  6. Verify the charging plug types listed under Your plugs.
  7. Finally, save the settings.

Once configured, battery predictions and charging suggestions will automatically appear when you enter a destination.

The update is currently rolling out to Android Auto users in the United States. Google has indicated that support for additional vehicles will be available soon, but has not provided specific details on the models, brands, or a timeline for wider availability.
