A 17-year-old has died after being shot at a season-opening football game in California, sending attendees scrambling for safety. 

The unidentified teen was shot near the south side of the field around 8pm, shortly after the game started. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

A fight between a group broke out before the shooting occurred, KGET reported. 

Up to eight shots were fired, a KGET photojournalist, who was at the game, observed.  

No suspects have been announced, and no arrests have been made. Police do not believe there is a public threat. 

'We know that families look forward to coming out here every Friday night and seeing their kids play on this field. Based on our preliminary investigation, we believe this began as an isolated incident that began as an altercation between a group of individuals, which ultimately resulted in the shooting,' Sergeant Eric Celedon said. 

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Bakersfield Police Department for comment. 

Footage from inside the stadium showed attendees running away in fear, with some football players crouching behind bushes. 

Scared people ran to their cars and out of the stadium exits while a large police presence surrounded the area, video captured by Bakersfield Now showed. 

A woman was seen clutching her chest as she and other fans were evacuated from the metal stands. 

Others appeared to be in tears as they made hurried calls to loved ones.  

Local sportscaster, Vance Palm, said the shots sounded like fireworks at first. 

'Certainly heard something, and then within a matter of seconds the entire Independence home stands all started rushing north [away from the shooting],' he said. 

Celedon reiterated that the community will bounce back from the tragedy. 

'We can get through this, and I’m confident that next Friday, everybody will be back out here full force, enjoying the football games as their team,' he said. 

A prayer service will be held at the high school. 

Across the country at a Jacksonville, Florida, football game, a 19-year-old woman and 20-year-old man were injured after being shot at the game. 

Police believe the suspects were just attending the game and had no affiliation with the schools, The Florida Times-Union reported. 

'This incident stems from an ongoing dispute between the parties and doesn’t pose any additional danger to the community or to the two schools that were participating in the football game,' Officer Frederick Dash said. 

The suspects are believed to be in their early 20s.
