Pakistan's military chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, a key conduit in U.S.-Iran negotiations, is set to visit Tehran Monday, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei announced Sunday.

The visit by Munir and the accompanying delegation aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and build on "Pakistan’s efforts to help strengthen peace and security in the region," Baghaei said in remarks carried by Iran's state-run news agency IRNA.

Munir will hold discussions with senior Iranian officials during the trip, he added.

The announcement came after the Pakistani military leader held a in a phone call Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the regional situation and ways to revive long-stalled direct talks with the U.S. to end the monthslong Middle East war.

The duo discussed "regional developments and effective ways to strengthen peace, stability and security in West Asia," the Iranian government said in a post on X.

The conversation covered regional security challenges and strategies for reinforcing stability in the region, Mehr news agency reported, citing an Iranian Foreign Ministry readout.

No further details were provided by the Foreign Ministry.

The latest contact comes amid a renewed push by mediators – Pakistan and Qatar – to bring the two warring sides to the table following the expiration of a 60-day deadline to reach a final agreement to end their war.

Pakistan has acted as a key mediator between Iran and the U.S. throughout the war and has maintained close contact with both sides.

The U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 and launched negotiations toward a final agreement.

However, the talks later stalled over disagreements on security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategic routes for global energy supplies and trade.

Between July 8 and July 24, the U.S. and Iran exchanged military strikes, with Washington launching attacks on targets inside Iran and Tehran responding by striking U.S. military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
