The U.S. Navy has demonstrated a new capability that could allow its largest warships to manufacture and repair metal components while deployed at sea. On July 3, 2026, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt successfully operated a containerized hybrid-metal 3D printer during RIMPAC, marking the first deployment of this type of manufacturing system aboard an active U.S. Navy warship.

The system, called the ADDiTEC HYBRiD-X, combines additive manufacturing with conventional machining. It can produce replacement components from digital designs and repair existing metal parts, potentially allowing sailors to address equipment failures without waiting for replacement components to arrive from shore, according to Marine Insight.

Traditional manufacturing often requires material to be cut from larger blocks, creating waste and requiring parts to be produced and shipped through established supply chains. Additive manufacturing takes a different approach by building components layer by layer, allowing specific parts to be produced on demand.

For a carrier operating thousands of miles from a major naval facility, that capability could significantly reduce the time required to restore damaged equipment. Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class Scott Barber, assigned to the Theodore Roosevelt, said the technology allows crews to identify a problem and develop a solution while also reducing lead times.

The project is being led by the Naval Postgraduate School’s Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education, or CAMRE, in Monterey, California, together with FLEETWERX and the Marine Innovation Unit. Members of the Marine Innovation Unit, a specialized Marine Corps Reserve organization, contributed private-sector technical expertise during the system’s integration aboard the carrier.

Marine Corps Sgt. Ronald Bair, an MIU subject matter expert working aboard the ship, said collaboration between sailors and Marines played an important role in successfully introducing the equipment. The deployment also provided personnel with practical experience operating advanced manufacturing systems.

The HYBRiD-X was not deployed without preparation. Before reaching the Theodore Roosevelt, the platform underwent testing at shore-based facilities and with smaller expeditionary units to demonstrate that the technology could function in operational environments.

The Navy’s move toward onboard manufacturing reflects a broader effort to make deployed forces less dependent on vulnerable and time-consuming supply chains. If the technology proves reliable at sea, similar systems could eventually allow warships to produce a wider range of replacement components during long deployments.
