Von Miller is expected to report to the Cowboys' training camp in Oxnard

Дата публикации: 18-08-2026 07:33:36

Jadeveon Clowney, 33, led the Dallas Cowboys defense in sacks (8.5) last year after they traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Clowney is now a Houston Texan, but the Cowboys seem keen on replacing his production and veteran presence with the signing of Von Miller. The 37-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys after leading the Washington Commanders with nine sacks of his own. Washington only won five games, and Miller moved on.
Miller, the league’s active leader in career sacks, now brings his two Super Bowl championships and Super Bowl 50 MVP experience to a team looking to rebuild one of the worst defenses in franchise history.
NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs asked head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Hall of Fame Owner/General Manager Jerry Jones, and second-year pass rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku about what Miller can be expected to contribute.
“In no way, shape, or form is this where he comes in and takes over, any of that. He’s just another really good player that we’re adding to the addition of Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Malachi Lawrence, James Houston played great the other night, Sam Williams,” Schottenheimer said. “You can never have enough pass rushers.”
“He understands the game. The football intellect, intelligence are pretty top tier. Our plan to use him, we think, will help him be very, very functional. He’s not gonna play 60 games. That’s not what we’re looking for, but he’s gonna get the snaps he’s gonna get, and that’s gonna make us better.”
“When you’re a champion, you can speak to that as we climb this ladder and we get closer to our main objective, which is SoFi 2027, Valentine’s Day. But the biggest reason is we think he’s going to impact us both on and off the field as a player. He’s gonna give us great versatility and great depth as a pass rusher,” Schottenheimer said.
Jerry Jones had similar praise.
“He’s a veteran that can really bring a great aspect to the team from the team concept. Like I said, really wants to be here, we want him here, and we believe he can come in here and really can give us some additional pressure on that other quarterback,” Jones said.
On that Super Bowl 50 team, Von Miller credits former Cowboy Demarcus Ware for mentoring him and making him a champion. Now, defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku wants Miller to do the same for him.
“He brings a lot of knowledge and experience, especially, like I said, myself (Malachi Lawrence) we’re younger in the game, and it’ll be a great help to us. That’s something that we discussed. He wants to be that guy and that teammate for us, as well as contribute, obviously,” Ezeiruaku said.
Scruggs also spoke to beat writer Clarence Hill with ALL CITY DLLS, who has been covering the team since 1997, about what Miller, a DeSoto native, can contribute at 37.
“Last year, nine sacks with Washington- only 37% of the plays, but nine sacks with Washington. He would have led the Cowboys in sacks last year. The Cowboys have needed a pass rusher, a difference-making pass rusher, since trading away Micah Parsons. They said all they wanted to say last year; they still have not replaced Micah Parsons. Listen, Von Miller- not Super Bowl Von Miller, not prime Von Miller- he can still get to the quarterback. He’s probably still the best pass rusher on the Cowboys right now,” Hill said. “He’s a mentor. Not only Donovan Ezeiruaku. How about Dak Prescott? How about Quinnen Williams? Quinnen Williams has never been in the playoffs… (Miller’s) won two Super Bowl titles, been Super Bowl MVP. Yes, he’s going to be a mentor to the young defensive ends, young edge rushers; teach them how to get to the quarterback, teach them how to rush the passer. But he’s also a leader in the locker room, knows how to win in the postseason. They don’t have players on the team who know how to do that, so yes, he’s going to help the young guys. He’s also going to have the old guys learn how to win in the postseason.”
The Cowboys expect Miller to report to training camp on Tuesday. He’ll go through a ramp-up process. The Cowboys are starting joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, who are led by former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
Saints first-round pick Jordyn Tyson, who is from Allen, was just ruled out for several weeks with a hamstring injury, according to the NFL. The 22-year-old receiver also battled injuries during his college career at Arizona State.
The Cowboys host the Saints in their final preseason game on Friday, Aug. 28.
