A universal coronavirus vaccine designed entirely with the help of artificial intelligence has successfully completed its first human clinical trial, offering a potential new approach to protecting people against future coronavirus outbreaks.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge and biotechnology company DIOSynVax (DVX) Ltd reported that the experimental vaccine was safe and well tolerated in a Phase 1 study involving 39 healthy volunteers. The trial found no significant side effects and showed promising immune responses against a range of coronaviruses.
Unlike conventional vaccines, which are designed to target specific virus strains, the new vaccine aims to provide protection across the broader Sarbeco coronavirus family. This group includes SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19, the SARS virus, and several related bat coronaviruses that could potentially infect humans in the future.
The vaccine’s active ingredient was created using artificial intelligence and machine learning, making it the first human-tested vaccine developed entirely through computer-generated antigen design. Researchers analyzed genetic data from coronaviruses collected through surveillance programs worldwide and used AI to identify shared features across the virus family. These common elements were combined into a single “super-antigen” designed to train the immune system to recognize a wide range of related viruses.
Trial results showed immune responses against SARS-CoV-2, SARS, and several bat coronaviruses that have not yet crossed into humans. Scientists hope this broader protection could reduce the need for frequent vaccine updates as viruses evolve.
Professor Jonathan Heeney, who led the research at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Veterinary Medicine, said the technology could shift vaccine development from a reactive process to a preventive one. Rather than continually updating vaccines to match circulating variants, researchers aim to create vaccines capable of remaining effective as viruses mutate.
The vaccine was delivered as a DNA vaccine using a needle-free microfluid jet system at clinical research facilities in Cambridge and Southampton. Researchers believe the approach could simplify large-scale vaccination efforts while improving accessibility for people who dislike injections.
A larger Phase 2 trial is now planned to evaluate the vaccine’s effectiveness in a broader population. Scientists also believe the AI-driven design platform could eventually be adapted to develop universal vaccines against other rapidly evolving virus families, including influenza and Ebola.
