Auto races often see some dangerous moments. One came at a surprising point in IndyCar’s Detroit Grand Prix Sunday. There, Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden clipped a pit crew member on his way out of the pits early on:

The NBC/Peacock broadcast later updated that the crew member in question got a cut on his shin, but was able to continue. However, Newgarden (who just won the Indy 500) saw his own day take a turn following a Turn 3 collision with Chip Ganassi Racing driver Álex Palou (who was leading the overall series with 183 points heading into this race):

Newgarden stayed in the race after that despite damage to his car, but wound up six laps behind the leaders. Scott Dixon eventually won. But Newgarden’s close call in the pits and then his crash with Palou meant there was a lot of discussion about him. It’s fortunate his pit road incident didn’t cause more serious harm.
