  Alice Chilton is a major addition to the coaching staff for the women’s team in Season 4. She has experience in the women’s game, and she can translate a lot of gender-specific things for the other two male coaches.

  Reynolds is known for playing Lily Iglehart in Netflix’s Sex Education. Mrs. Elton in Emma (2020) and Licisia in The Decameron on Netflix.

  Jude Mack portrays Katie the goalkeeper, who goes by ‘Boots.’ She has a level of intensity about her play that can only be summed up in the fact that she refuses to wear goalie gloves so that she can feel the sting of the ball whenever she makes a save.

  Mack told Deadline that English soccer player Mary Earps of the London City Lionesses served as the main inspiration for her character.

  “Hopefully, there’s a lot of her in this role in terms of how she carries herself and how she’s running that pitch,” the actress said. “I borrowed lots from her, which was very helpful.”

  Siobhan and Niamh are twin defenders who play left and right center back.

  Ted suspects that Siobhan is the older twin, but both of them antagonize each other on and off the field, which detracts from the teamwork. As Coach Chilton puts it, “what they lack in athleticism, they make up for in aggressiveness.”

  From what viewers see in the second episode, Siobhan looks to be the main provoker of the duo both on and off the field.

  Abbie Hern, who plays last-minute recruit Gemma Jay, joins the team after Alice Chilton names her as a potential replacement striker. The two go way back because they used to be teammates.

  “Me and Gemma take a lot of inspiration from Chloe Kelly. My golly, she knows what she’s doing. She’s so swag. She’s so confident. She goes out there and she gets done what she needs to get done,” Hern told Deadline. “So the characters’ resilience and drive I took from Kelly, and then my favorite players — if only if I could take like 5% of the humor of Ella Toone and [Alessia] Russo, and their friendship, honestly, all the Lionesses’  friendship. If we can show like half of that dynamic.”

  Toone also plays attacking midfielder for Women’s Super League Club Manchester. Until she gets approached by Alice and Ted at her university library, Gemma has been studying to be a lawyer, and she plans to both continue with that and play soccer. She has quite a moment as “backup striker” coming off the bench and netting a goal for a slow first friendly match in which the lady greyhounds debut with sparkly home-made uniforms courtesy of Phoebe (Elodie Blomfield) and her friends.

  “It’s a perfect kickstart and introduction to that character. She’s on the sideline with her leg shaking, just ready to go on prove what she’s got,” Hern said. “I think she’s actually someone who would find it hard to jump into a team like that and sell herself, and the only way she can sell herself is by scoring the goal and helping them out in that way. And so that’s the perfect way for her to do that and establishes a bond with them straight away.”

  Faye Marsay’s Lizzie is a mix of Women’s Super League club Arsenal’s defender and midfielder Leah Williamson, Chelsea’s winger Karen Carney, Arsenal forward Kelly Smith and more. She has an adorable little boy whom she brings to tryouts because she couldn’t find childcare, and she represents players who get back in the game after having children.

  “That’s something that we wanted to highlight is like how how easy is it for a woman to go away, do that, and then come back to the sort of peak of their career. Obviously, with Lizzie, she hasn’t done that, so she’s had the children, and this is a last chance to come back and get back into it,” Marsay told Deadline. “So I think it’s really important that that’s been shown.”

  When she joins the team, she brings some of her motherly instincts onto the field, especially when it comes to bickering twins Siobhan and Niamh, tries to get them to be teammates.

  “I think with Rex and Ash, who who play the twins, I think when we first see Lizzie, she kind of is drawn to want to control them and be Mama Bear and all that stuff, but I think as we go along, Lizzie will hopefully pull away from that a little bit,” she said. “And it’ll be more about being a team and being just a group of human beings, a group of women, and that behavior kind of gets knocked out of her a little bit because she can be not mum here; she can be footballer Lizzie and friend and part of the gang.”

• Shannon Hayes as Shannon Stone

  Shannon may look familiar to some because she is the girl from the park who would interact with Ted here and there on his walk home from training in previous seasons while he coached the men’s team. She could pull off some tricks even in her school uniform against her guy friends.

  Ted couldn’t tell Shannon no when she attended the open tryouts for the striker position, but it is unclear if she’ll play there yet.

  Niamh is the younger twin who plays centeral defense alongside her sister, Siobhan. She greets Ted with optimism and a warm welcome, or as a kiss-ass and suck up according to her sister, who mocks her in the locker room.

  Irish actress Sharkey played Ivy in Heirs of the Night and Madison in Jurassic World: Dominion (2022).

  Annelise Heywood plays Mady, who is romantically involved with Margy (Mercedes Assad). The pair have been a couple since training camp, according to Coach Chilton.

  Margy is Mady’s girlfriend. They have a tangle up during practice that tips Ted off as to their romantic status.
