Two of the newest Edmonton Oilers, d-man Ryan Shea and forward Alex Formenton, brought their “A” games for their first games as Oilers, both of them scoring, both of them looking like solid additions to the team. Their play helped lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-2 win.

Formenton had three breakaways. Shea made a bundle of sharp passes, looking cool, calm and collected with the puck on his stick.

Leon Draisaitl, 7. Good game. Early turnover by Draisaitl leads to Grade A shot by Noah Gregor. Swift and true pass to Shea for Edmonton’s first goal. He chased down and thwarted a Jets break-in attempt in the second after a McDavid turnover. He scored on an outside wrister through heavy traffic.

Connor McDavid. 8: Easily the best player on the ice. He was moving a 2X speed, while some of the Jets defender were at 0.75. Not a fair fight. Whipped around the o-zone and banked in a shot to give Edmonton a 2-1 lead. Next set up Podz for a nasty slotter. O-zone turnover led to a tough stop for Jarry in the second.

Vasily Podkolzin, 7. He charged in on a second period break-in off a great Draisaitl pass but failed to score.

Colton Dach, 6. Blasted a Jets d-man off his feet with a wicked hit in the first. He went for the hit early in the second, but got caught up-ice on a scary Jets attack. He got a hard shot on net early in the third off a Formenton battle won and slot pass. Solid in the dot. Put in an empty net goal.

Alex Formenton, 8. Impressive speed, picked off a pass in the first and ripped a hard shot. Picked off a pass on the PK and launched a dangerous slot backhander on net. He broke in like a bullet to skate onto a clearing pass, then deked out the goalie for a breakaway tally. He won the puck and broke in for a second breakaway in the last seconds of the second. After his goal, Sportsnet’s Mark Spector reported, “There was a small protest outside the building pregame, but as Alex Formenton’s name is announced as the goal scorer in Period 2, the crowd cheers no more or less than they have for any other scorer. Not a boo heard, from where I’m sitting.” He got a third breakaway in the third period, got hauled down, bringing on an Edmonton power play. He was named the game’s third star.

Mathieu Joseph, 7. He was a buzz, buzz, buzzin’ all over. Good wheels. Moved fast on the forecheck, tipped a shot on net in the first. Solid blocked shot on the PK in the first. Nifty backhand pass to send in Dach on a 2-on-1 early in the third

Ike Howard, 4. Poor read on the backcheck on the first goal against, went towards the puck even as it was already covered off by an Oilers d-man, instead of picking up his man. And his man put it in the net behind Jarry. Picked it up with solid hustle after that.

Josh Samanski, 4. Too quiet, and partly at fault on second goal against.

Max Jones, 6. Good hustle, as always. Turnover at the o-zone blueline on the first goal against. Picked off a pass early in the third and threw a nasty shot towards net.

Owen Michaels, 6. Some solid play in all three zones early on, with a solid defensive stop on a Jets attacker who looked like he might have a step on Michaels. Excellent attacking play to win puck race and set up Griffith for a chance. Screened the goalie on Drai’s 3-1 goal.

William Nicholl, 4. He lost his check on an early Grade A shot. Lots of hustle but seemed a step behind the play.

Seth Griffith, 4. Quiet game.

Ryan Shea, 8. First impression? A faster version of Cody Ceci, meaning a smart two-way player with a bit of pace. One goal, two assists. Looked like he fit right in on over a minute of o-zone possession early in the first with the McDavid line. He made a few swell dekes to move into the slot and snap home Edmonton’s 1-1 goal, putting it top shelf where Gramma keeps the cookies, as legendary Edmonton skills coach Jim Fleming likes to say.

Spencer Stastney, 4. Some positional mistakes. Allowed a pass into the slot in the first for a 5-alarm shot. Failed to thwart the attack on a Jets rush and tipped shot early in the second. Caught up-ice on a 2-on-1 late in the second.

Josh Brown, 2. Slow to pivot on the first goal against, allowed the pass across for the goal against. Took a reach-in hooking penalty when he got beat by a nifty o-zone move. Caught sliding and took out Samanski as part of the Sequence of Pain on Winnipeg’s second goal.

Ty Emberson, 6. Solid and safe game.

Evan Bouchard, 8. All kinds of great plays with the puck. Four assists.

Riley Stillman, 4. Kept it quiet, but was part of the problem on the second Jets goal.

Tristan Jarry, 7. A few big saves in the first two periods, not much chance on the first goal against.

Matt Tomkins, 5. Quiet third period, little action. Goal against not his fault.
