Alva’s Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, at Mijar in Moodbidri, which will be inaugurated on Monday, has reserved 54 seats for the Tulu-speaking minority community, according to M. Mohan Alva, Chairman, Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri.

Addressing presspersons in Moodbidri on Saturday he said that the college has received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to admit 150 students for the MBBS course for 2026–27 academic year.

“Reserving 54 seats for the Tulu-speaking minority community marks a significant step in expanding opportunities for medical education for Tulu-speaking students,” he said.

Dr. Alva said that the inauguration ceremony will be held at Shobha Mohan Alva Campus in Mijar.

He said the institution, which adds medical education to Alva’s Education Foundation’s academic legacy, prioritises an environment that fosters humanity, compassion, and a spirit of social service among students alongside modern medical training. In addition to meeting the mandatory standards set by the NMC, the college provides infrastructure and facilities that exceed requirements across various departments.

He said constructed on a sprawling campus in Mijar, the medical college features an artistic design infused with a spiritual touch. The campus has been designed to ensure students enjoy a pleasant atmosphere while pursuing their education. The college features various departments, spacious classrooms, an auditorium equipped with modern facilities, and a large library that operates round the clock for the convenience of students and faculty.

While the front of the campus has been aesthetically designed, significant emphasis has been placed on greenery at the rear. The entire environment prioritises cleanliness and environmental conservation. Experienced professors have been appointed across all departments, and facilities — including the technology and gadgets essential for modern medical education — have been provided. There are plans to construct a separate 650-bed hospital in Mijar in the near future, he said.

He said established in 1986 with the aim of providing quality, affordable healthcare to all sections of society, the Alva’s Health Centre (AHC) has now grown into a 650-bed multidisciplinary hospital. With approximately 800 to 1,000 outpatients visiting daily, the hospital provides medical students with extensive clinical training and practical experience.

Alva’s Health Centre has undertaken the management of the Moodbidri Community Health Centre, as well as the Primary Health Centres at Beluvai and Shakti Nagar, under the State government’s public-private partnership model. Quality, effective, and people-friendly healthcare services are being provided to the public through these centres, he said.

The ‘Alva’s Punarjanma Centre’ — established with the aim of creating an addiction-free society — has been upgraded into the 50-bed ‘Alva’s Punarjanma Mental Health Hospital.’ It offers multidisciplinary and comprehensive mental health treatment services. Plans are also in place to expand this facility into a 200-bed hospital in the future, he said.

There are plans to develop several new facilities, such as a dedicated care and treatment unit for the elderly, separate departments for dialysis and eye care, and a palliative care centre for bedridden patients.

Meanwhile, Alva’s Medical College is the eighth medical college in Dakshina Kannada offering the MBBS course.
