Jordan Spieth has been chosen to finish out the rest of Rory McIlroy's term as a member of the PGA Tour policy board, according to a statement by commissioner Jay Monahan (via NBC's Rex Hoggard).

'Jordan has extensive experience with the Tour's governance process, having served two years on the Player Advisory Council (2017-18) including PAC Chairman in 2018 and three years (2019-21) as a Player Director,' the statement read.

Spieth joins Patrick Cantlay, Charley Hoffmann, Peter Malnati, Webb Simpson, and Tiger Woods on the board. Hoffman will be replaced in 2024 by Adam Scott.

McIlroy announced last Wednesday that he'd be giving up his seat on the board amidst growing exasperation as LIV Golf and the PGA Tour work on a merger.

In answer to a question from Mail Sport about those commitments, McIlroy had said on Tuesday: ‘(It’s) not what I signed for whenever I went on the board.’ 

When asked if he might be interested in taking McIlroy's position, Masters champion Jon Rahm said, ‘I've been asked a couple times if I have any interest (in joining the policy board), and I'm not going to spend six, seven hours in meetings. 

'I'm not here for that. I think it could hinder a little bit and there's a reason probably why I can't recall any great player being a full-time board member and winning majors at the same time, at least in recent history.’

It's been a tough year for McIlroy amidst the proposed merger - with the Irishman calling himself a 'sacrificial lamb' back in June.

In his memo announcing McIlroy’s resignation, Monahan wrote: ‘Given the extraordinary time and effort that Rory has invested in the Tour during this unprecedented, transformational period in our history, we certainly understand and respect his decision to step down in order to focus on his game and his family.’

Last season, McIlroy won the CJ Cup and the Genesis Scottish Open on the PGA Tour - as well as the Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour.
