Alexis Mac Allister has revealed he is ‘very sad’ that Liverpool have not offered him a new contract.

The Argentina star, 27, has watched his midfield colleagues, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, sign new deals – and insists there were chances for him to leave the club this summer. 

Asked how close he got to leaving, Mac Allister said: ‘There was a chance. As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which of course makes me very, very sad.

‘Because everyone can see I give 100 per cent for this football club every single day. In training and games. I can have good games, bad games, like everyone – but I always give my best. 

‘I see Dominik and Ryan renew their contracts. That makes me very happy because they deserve it but also at the same time it makes me very sad I didn’t get mine.

‘Of course, there is still time, the fans don’t have to worry because I will give 100 per cent until my very last day I am here. We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer but I think right now I am in the right club.’

Mac Allister is contracted for two more seasons, including the current one, and says there is ‘maybe’ a chance that the situation could change – though he will be close to turning 30 by the time his current deal expires. 

When asked if the club could alter their decision, the former Brighton midfielder replied: ‘Maybe, I don’t know. It depends on how I perform during these years. Like every football player. And they (have a) right to make their decision as well.

‘But as I said, the fans do not need to worry because I am going to give my 100 per cent and hopefully or maybe they will change their minds.

‘In my three years at the club, I have done very good things, we went through difficult times and won a Premier League and Carabao Cup. For me it has been a very successful period of my life, I don’t think I have to prove something but of course I need to show my level.

‘I love this club, I love being here, I love the fans, as a player it sometimes happens when you are at a club for a long, long time and you don’t realise where you are. That doesn’t happen to me, I know this is an amazing club and this city is very special. I love being here.’

Liverpool host Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening in head coach Andoni Iraola’s Champions League debut. The Basque boss said the main thing is that Mac Allister wants to be at the club and he ‘rates him very highly’.
