Have you ever wondered what fashion editors actually wear to a week's worth of runways, presentations, and parties? Well, for this fashion writer — who, like many editors, rarely gets offered to be dressed by designers (unlike front-row celeb and A-list influencers) and who is stuck with her outfit all day after she leaves her Brooklyn home — here it is. Hi, I'm Refinery29's senior fashion commerce writer reporting for duty on the best street style looks and runway trends, while trying to look the part for it all.
When it comes to dressing for the Spring/Summer 2027 runways in the fall (when the weather doesn't quite know if it wants to be 87 degrees one day or cloudy and pouring the next), my outfits tend to be a big mix of spring-ready and fall-forward styles. Think: rich textures and dark color palettes as well as breezy fabrics and playful accessories. But I think I really cracked the code for my perfect outfit formula: a head-to-toe monochromatic look that's low effort to put together, but really impactful in the end.

The unofficial first day of NYFW was somewhat of a slow, but long one for me, starting with a bang at the Cult Gaia show (which provided this whimsical backdrop). I opted for a simple and comfortable look that would last me, reserving my bolder outfits for runway-packed days. I wore a Wayf slip dress-top-hybrid over a pair of Uniqlo barrel jeans for an effortlessly cool silhouette, accessorizing with a B-Low The Belt suede hobo bag and matching Marc Fisher suede heeled boots that could handle lots of walking around the city between previews and dinners.

Was it 87 degrees and sunny this day? Yes, yes it was. But again, I wanted to serve business-realness and save my favorite looks for the bulk of my shows. These purple Gap horseshoe jeans are a closet staple for me (BTW, drawstring pants are in!), so I built a fall-forward purple-and-brown outfit around them. I paired a textured boatneck top that I thrifted with a Reiss double-breasted blazer and my go-to Larroudé suede booties. A burgundy Uniqlo crescent bag was the real winner for me, though, because it perfectly fit my laptop so I could work in between shows.

Now I felt I could get more colorful and experimental! For a big day of five back-to-back runways, I opted for light and breezy pieces, putting together a monochromatic chartreuse green look. I surprisingly own a lot of slime-y green pieces that I actually find very versatile. But I was most excited to revolve my outfit around statement accessories, including (now-sold-out) kitschy John Fluevog Mary Jane heels and a Michael Kors bowling bag, which I specifically purchased with a NYFW outfit in mind. Then, a Cider sleeveless top and Topshop flowy striped skirt came after to pull it all together. And then the compliments started rolling in!

Another monochromatic look for the win. Ever since I reviewed these GapStudio pieces, I knew I wanted to wear this exact outfit to NYFW. The true-blue canvas jacket and belted pants give the look of a denim set, as does the denim-printed mesh top underneath, which particularly felt fitting for the 7 For All Mankind runway. I styled the set with a blue snakeskin Brahmin bag and blue suede wedges along with sleek silver jewelry and statement sunglasses for a head-to-toe bold look.

Did I decide to step into the pouring rain in a mesh maxi dress and suede jacket? I did indeed. But I'm glad I did, because this look has wound up being one of my favorites. My burnt orange thrifted Dressbarn jacket and Hobo brand suede shoulder bag are some of my most prized processions, and they surprisingly paired well with my new Ola Azul printed mesh coverup. To make it feel a bit more "fall," I added a dark green Free People skinny scarf and burgundy slingback heels. Gold chunky jewelry from Jenny Bird were the finishing touches for this wacky (but dare I say, fabulous) look.

Tapping into the Monday back-to-work mindset, I styled a business casual 'fit, pairing a simple white button-down shirt with one of my father's striped ties (also on trend). Pulling from the bright pink print, I added my pink Nicole Miller skirt, favorite Vivaia heeled sandals, coral Warby Parker sunglasses, and a resin bangle from Marshalls. But for the biggest contrast, my new yellow T'abbe puffy purse was the star of the show, gaining a lot of attention from street style photographers. And if you're wondering, yes, it actually fits a laptop!

For my final day of NYFW, I went comfort-first and finally gave in with a pair of sneakers rather than heels. Inspired by the overwhelming shades of purple across runways, I worked around the colors of my new Hutch pleated maxi skirt (and matching tote bag), adding a brown Gap halter top, purple socks, and brown Puma sneakers. I also pulled from the olive in the skirt's print and took apart my chartreuse convertible Kate Spade Duo Crossbody bag, wearing just the strap as a fanny pack for a pop of color. This too gained a lot of attention and compliments — yay for bags that double as belts!
