NORTH BERWICK — They were looking for a second straight win to start the season, but the players on the Bonny Eagle football team came into Friday night’s matchup with Noble in an ornery mood.

The Scots defeated South Portland in Week 1, but they made mistakes. Their offense scuffled. Their defense wasn’t sharp. And they couldn’t wait for a chance to correct things.

“We didn’t think we played to our standard at all last week,” quarterback Lucas Klehn said.

Friday was a little more like it. Klehn ran for four touchdowns and threw for another, Ben Noe (rushing) and Drew Gervais (receiving) both surpassed 100 yards, and Bonny Eagle pulled away after a frenzied start to beat Noble, 41-19.

“We had to improve, everyone had to improve,” Gervais said. “I just wanted to really show what we were all about.”

The first half was a blur, as both teams combined for 40 points in the first 13 minutes of play, and Bonny Eagle (2-0), ranked second in the Varsity Maine poll, took a 27-19 lead into the break.

From there, though, the Scots found a rhythm. The offense stayed hot with touchdowns on its first two drives, an 8-yard run by Klehn and a 21-yard screen pass to Gervais, while the defense pitched a second-half shutout, forcing two Noble (1-1) turnovers in the process.

“We’ve got to figure out a way to defend a little bit better. We can’t give up 19 points as quick as we did,” Scots coach Kevin Cooper said. “I thought our offense took strides tonight, being able to do some different things and spread the ball around.”

• The first half was a shootout, as both teams quickly raced up and down the field. Noble went 80 yards in six plays on its first drive, capping the march with quarterback Mark LaPointe’s 1-yard run, but Bonny Eagle answered in three plays with a 50-yard pass to Gervais, a 28-yard run by Noe, and a 2-yard run by Klehn to make it 6-6.

• After Bonny Eagle went ahead on Wes Pinkham’s 11-yard run and Noble answered with Tristan Miniutti’s 70-yard return on the following kickoff, the Scots made it touchdowns on their first four drives, as Klehn found the end zone from 1 and then from 6 yards out to make it 27-13 with 11:02 left in the second quarter.

• Noble moved closer when LaPointe found Ayden Decato for an 8-yard score with 1:36 left in the half. The Knights had a field goal try from 39 yards as time expired, but missed.

“At halftime, it felt great. We were in a game. We made too many mistakes, but we were still in the game at that point,” Noble coach Keenon Blindow said. “Bonny Eagle came out and controlled the clock and had some long drives, we had a couple of short drives, and that kind of turned the game.”

Cooper highlighted the play of outside linebacker Aiden McCormack, a first-year starter, when talking about his defense’s tighter second-half performance.

“He’s not the biggest guy, but playing very physical, playing very tough,” Cooper said. “We’re doing a lot of things with him. We’re playing him off the ball linebacker, as a rush linebacker, so it’s pretty multi-faceted, what he’s doing for us right now.”
