Two people died and four others were injured after suffering electrocution at a drinking water stall near a Ganesh pandal in Lalbaug, Mumbai, officials said. The incident took place around 2.20 a.m. on Sunday (September 20, 2026) at the entrance of the Mahaganpati Utsav Mandal in Digvijay Mill Chawl on Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki, where large crowds had gathered for the Ganesh festival.

An eight-year-old girl, Raghini Ghanshyam Yadav, and a 33-year-old woman, Sujata, died in the incident.

An electric current was detected at a temporary stall set up for drinking water and cold drinks near the pandal entrance, officials said. A short circuit is suspected to have occurred at the spot.

Fire brigade personnel switched off the power supply and cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure.

Six people who suffered electric shocks were taken to hospitals. Raghini was declared brought dead at Masina Hospital in Byculla. Kiran Akbar Naik, 19, Tanvi Naresh Hande, 19, and Sahil Sandip Tare, 19, were admitted to the hospital and were in stable condition, a civic official said.

Two others were taken to Global Hospital in Parel. Sujata was declared brought dead at the hospital, while 12-year-old Ruhi Singh was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition, the official said.

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) inspected the chawl following the incident. The inspection found that a temporary electric meter had been installed to provide power for illumination during the Ganesh festival and for the cold drink stall. A local electrician subsequently disconnected the wiring and miniature circuit breaker, officials said.

Power supply to the site remained partially disconnected. A BEST fuseman and meter inspector also assisted with the inspection.

The Kalachowki police have begun an investigation to ascertain the cause of the short circuit, officials said.
