Alex Bregman says he's ‘super lucky' after being hit by foul ball

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman is still sporting a heck of a shiner after being struck by a foul ball, but could he be back in the lineup this weekend?
Bregman spoke to reporters Wednesday prior to the Cubs’ game against the Miami Marlins, and despite his rough appearance, he says he’s feeling very fortunate that the injury wasn’t worse.
“(I was) super lucky it hit where it hit and just a lot of gratitude that it wasn’t a few centimeters higher,” he said.
Bregman was standing near the on-deck circle during Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds when Michael Busch hit a foul ball with a check swing. The ball bounced once off the turf and hit Bregman just below his left eye.
According to the Cubs, Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures, but the team has not put him on the injured list with less than a week to go in the regular season, and he’s aiming to get back in the lineup in enough time to be ready for the playoffs he hopes the Cubs are competing in.
“Yeah. I hope so,” Bregman said when asked if he would play in this weekend’s series against the Boston Red Sox.
Manager Craig Counsell didn’t commit to trying to get Bregman back on the field in the coming days, but said he was happy with his progress so far.
“He’s still got significant swelling in his face and his eye that needs to improve,” he said. “But all things considered, he’s in a good place.”
Despite Counsell’s apprehension, Bregman said he would have tried to get in the lineup for Wednesday night’s game if he could have.
“I’m going to try to get in there tonight,” he said.
