The U.S. Exchange Alumni Network Uganda (USEA) has brought together more than 6,000 Ugandans who have participated in U.S. Government-funded exchange and education programmes, with a call for them to use the knowledge and networks gained abroad to create opportunities and transform communities at home.

The call was made during the second edition of the USEA Mega Homecoming, held at Makerere University's Freedom Square in Kampala under the theme, "All Regions, All Exchange Programmes, One Shared Vision."

U.S. Ambassador to Uganda Mikael (Mika) Cleverley, who was the chief guest, said the value of exchange programmes extends beyond the time participants spend abroad, urging alumni to become agents of change in their communities.

He described the Homecoming as a celebration of a community built around shared experiences and a common commitment to making a difference.

"An exchange programme is not simply a trip or a memory, but an experience that changes lives and creates a responsibility to change the lives of others," Cleverley said.

USEA President Owomugisha Blessing Immaculate said the real value of exchange programmes is demonstrated when participants return home and apply the skills, knowledge and networks they acquired.

"We return to our communities with knowledge, skills, networks and experiences that we can put into practice. We have more than 6,000 alumni, and across the different programmes, people are doing so many things in education, business, leadership, technology and community development," she said.

The Homecoming brought together alumni from different generations, regions and professional backgrounds, providing an opportunity to reconnect, share experiences, mentor young people and explore ways of turning global exposure into local impact.

Kampala Lord Mayor Engineer Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo, who participated in a U.S. exchange programme while serving as Mayor of Nakawa Division in 2016/2017, said the experience broadened his leadership skills and understanding of governance, democracy and the rule of law.

He said the programme exposed him to more than seven U.S. states and enabled him to network with leaders from around the world.

The event also featured alumni of the Fulbright Scholars Programme, including lawyer and lecturer Joel Basoga, who shared how his experience in the United States has influenced his work in Uganda, particularly in technology law, privacy and data protection.

A major focus of the Homecoming was mentorship and professional development, with participants encouraging established professionals to create opportunities for young people through mentorship, internships, professional guidance and networking.

Speakers also highlighted the need for continuous learning, digital skills and adaptability as technology and artificial intelligence continue to reshape the workplace.

The event further featured discussions on storytelling and its role in highlighting community impact. Participants were urged to tell authentic, people-centred stories while respecting the voices, dignity and consent of the communities involved.

USEA brings together alumni of more than 13 U.S. Government-funded exchange and education programmes, including the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Fulbright Scholars Program, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, International Visitor Leadership Program, Community Solutions Program and Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program.
