William Shatner, 95, got candid about the Star Trek franchise in a heartbreaking statement, which received mixed thoughts from fans online.

The actor portrayed the popular role of Captain James Tiberius Kirk from 1966 to 1994 on the hit series, and he recently shared his take on the character on social media, who was killed off on the show.

The star revealed: "In order to put a stop to the rumor mill before it starts producing even more fiction than Star Trek ever did, let me say this: If someone came up with a meaningful way to bring Captain Kirk back to life, and gave him something genuinely interesting to do that added to the beauty and spirit of Star Trek, I would be delighted to consider it…But that has never come up."

William Shatner got candid about the future of his role

He continued: "I love Star Trek just as much as all of you folks do. Kirk has been an extraordinary part of my life, and I would never want to bring him back simply for the sake of bringing him back."

William concluded: "So, until someone comes knocking with an idea worthy of Kirk…I wait. For them. Or for eternity."

He captioned the post: "A statement from me to you."

Fans were shocked and confused that William will not definitively revive the character, some were still in disbelief that Kirk was dead in the series, and others were surprised that William wasn't aware that in other versions of the show, Kirk is still alive and well.

On top of that, fans also had different opinions when it came to the future of the character pertaining to the Star Trek universe.

Some fans agreed with his statement and flocked to the comments. One person wrote: "I agree with Shatner. There needs to be a good reason especially since he's like ten thousand years old."

A second follower added: "This is always the right answer," while a third commenter continued: "You are 100 percent correct."

Another fan wrote: Awesome. Not many would so boldly honor the legacy of an icon. Class act, Bill…"

Others disagreed with the statement and believe it's best to leave the past in the past instead of reviving the role.

One fan wrote: "You mean an idea for Kirk which interests YOU to play. It's not for an actor to decide what idea is worthy of a character that they didn't create."

A second follower added: "I think resurrecting characters in fiction is annoying, a sign of weak writing, and mainly a form of fan-service. I also think the resurrection of Spock was a mistake as it lessened his enormous sacrifice."

Fans had differing opinions on his statement

A third person continued: "I think the most dignified thing you can do is leave the character where it is in the zeitgeist of language, cinema, pop culture and meme. There are billions of people and in that billions, [there are] so many new stories that are so hard to tell and get traction. Why spoil a magnificent life [and do] anything more with it, when so many past missteps could have spoiled the legacy."

They added: "You are also living an amazing life with age not slowing you down as much as it could, letting you enjoy so many varied experiences."
