An Alabama firefighter was struck by lightning just one year after surviving a fireworks explosion that blew up in his face.

James Lawley, 36, of Joppa, said he's grateful to be alive after lightning passed through a car and into his body during his daughter's birthday party on Sunday, he told WVTM 13.

'The only thing that I remember is just grabbing my chest and saying that I'm hit, I'm hit,' he told the outlet. 

A bolt struck his SUV before passing through him and going into a Cullman County firetruck. 

The EMT who assisted him told the firefighter that he was lucky to be alive, and more than likely only made it due to it being a secondary hit.

'That's probably the only thing that saved me,' he told WVTM 13. 

He now jokes that he only has four lives left after the lightning. The horrific incident also comes a year after he was struck in the face by a firework that had fallen sideways. 

When he went to move it right-side-up, it exploded into his face, leaving him with a wound by his nose that needed stitches. 

'We avoided fireworks that whole day because of that, and then at the end of the day, I get struck by lightning,' he said.  

'I don't know if it's the fifth of July or what, but I'm unlucky on that day.' 

The father now jokes that he will be wearing bubble wrap next year to avoid another accident. 

Following the bolt, Lawley said he was sore like it was his first week in the gym. 

'That's how my body felt for about three days afterwards,' he told the outlet. 

On top of the medical emergency, the firefighter has been going through chemotherapy since 2021 for an autoimmune condition. 

Although he says he can laugh about the incidents now, he's not taking any chances next year.
