CO₂ Value Europe member sequestra is advancing the measurement and verification of permanent CO₂ mineralisation, helping industrial companies better understand the CO₂ uptake potential of mineral residues such as slags, ashes, and construction and demolition waste.
Building the data needed to scale mineralisationIn September, sequestra Intelligence opened a dedicated laboratory focused on measuring the actual CO₂ uptake capacity and material characteristics of mineral residues. Its proprietary Luma analytics platform combines automated testing, material analysis and algorithmic data interpretation to assess the reactivity of materials and their potential for CO₂ binding.
This addresses an important challenge for the wider CCU community: quantifying how much CO₂ can be permanently bound, under which conditions, and with sufficient scientific robustness to support industrial and economic decisions.
From CO₂ uptake to viable projectsThe data generated through material assessment can help companies evaluate the technical and economic potential of mineralisation, including the suitability of materials for different applications and the investment and operating requirements of future plants.
This is becoming increasingly relevant as policy frameworks evolve to recognise permanent CO₂ storage and removal. Robust measurement and verification will be essential to demonstrate that claimed CO₂ uptake is real, quantifiable and durable.
Alongside its analytical activities, sequestra is developing a pre-industrial grinding and carbonation process line in Austria, with the aim of bringing its first industrial-scale plants to market from the end of 2027.
By strengthening the measurement, verification and data foundations of mineralisation, initiatives such as sequestra’s can help turn the substantial CO₂ uptake potential of industrial mineral residues into credible and scalable CCU projects.
