Within a single week, police from Yukon to Ontario seized loaded firearms, including a concealed prohibited firearm and a sawed-off gun, reported an armed home invasion, suspected drug trafficking, stolen property, outstanding warrants and repeated allegations of breached court conditions.

These are incidents in one troubled community. They occurred in small towns and our largest cities.

In the first Watson Lake investigation, police seized suspected cocaine and cash. One accused was charged with possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order and two counts of failing to comply with probation.^[i]

In the second Watson Lake investigation, a stolen-vehicle complaint resulted in the seizure of more suspected cocaine and a loaded rifle. Two people were charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and one was charged with failing to comply with a release order.

The public-policy question is unavoidable.

What protection does a firearms prohibition order or release order provide if the justice system can’t enforce compliance?

That same question arose in Portage la Prairie, where Manitoba RCMP allege a man assaulted one person, displayed a weapon and threatened to shoot another before fleeing.^[ii]

Officers recovered a modified air rifle—not a conventional firearm—and the accused faces ten charges, including six counts of possessing a weapon contrary to an order.

When a firearms prohibition order is not supported by meaningful enforcement, it’s just a record of what someone was forbidden to do. It has no actual public safety value.

Officers conducting an unrelated investigation found a concealed, loaded prohibited firearm on an 18-year-old. They now face charges of unauthorized firearm possession, carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with a release order.^[iii]

This is the criminal conduct Canadians expect firearm policy to confront but does not: an unauthorized person carrying a loaded prohibited firearm in public.

RCMP say an altercation at a residence escalated into gunfire and robbery, leaving one man seriously injured.^[iv]

Three people were charged with aggravated assault, reckless firearm discharge and robbery with a firearm. A police dog later located a sawed-off firearm in a yard, along with knives, a machete and brass knuckles.

Violent offenders with illegally modified weapons are a serious public safety concern.

RCMP allege that a man entered a home, assaulted a woman and pointed a high-powered rifle at her. Her husband tackled the accused, took away the rifle and held him until police arrived.^[v]

The accused faces numerous firearms, assault and break-and-enter charges. He was subsequently released on a release order.

Canadians deserve to know how people accused of serious violence with weapons are supervised after release and what happens when conditions are violated.

Police searched a residence and seized a shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle, approximately 26 ounces of methamphetamine and stolen property.^[vi]

Nine people were arrested, although five were released without charge. Two men face firearm, drug and property-related allegations; two women were charged in connection with outstanding warrants or public mischief.

Six reports across four provinces and territories in a single week prove this is not merely a small community problem or an isolated administrative mistake.

People accused of drug trafficking who are in possession of Illegal firearms, stolen property, with outstanding warrants and court-order violations are the threat to public safety. 

A prohibition order is a tool, not enforcement. 

A release condition is an instruction, not supervision. 

If governments want Canadians to believe these measures provide meaningful protection, they should publish meaningful results. 

• How quickly firearm-prohibition orders are entered and communicated, 
• How often high-risk offenders are subjected to compliance checks, 
• How alleged breaches are detected, 
• How long warrants remain outstanding and 
• What consequences follow repeated non-compliance.

Licensed firearm owners already submit to background screening, licence verification and extensive rules. 

Public safety will not improve by adding more restrictions to those most likely to obey them.

The harder task is ensuring that court orders imposed on genuinely high-risk people work outside the courthouse door.

Across Canada, this week’s police reports prove that is not happening.
