Anthropic unveiled Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday. The new model is the AI company's second launch as the debate over AI risks grows. Ahead of a planned IPO, the firm has been expanding its product lineup.

The second model in Claude 5.5 family, Claude Sonnet 5.5, is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, unchanged from its predecessor, Sonnet 5.

Sonnet 5.5 is a faster and lower-cost option than Claude Opus 5.5. The model needs lesser tokens to complete the same amount of work, said Anthropic. The model is best suited to carry out everyday enterprise tasks, such as document creation, spreadsheet work, coding, etc. Haiku 5.5, a third model, is being designed for fast and high-volume work. It will be released soon.

The model is the company's second launch after Claude Opus 5.5, which was launched at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens last week. Enterprise customers account for about 80% of Anthropic's business. Its clients include Goldman Sachs, Salesforce, Databricks and Novo Nordisk, the company said.

Earlier this month, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei called on the global AI community to slow down the pace of AI development. But the company is itself releasing new products.

After several concerns were raised regarding an upcoming AI apocalypse, many people have called for AI safeguards. In an interview aired on Sunday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said AI requires safeguards that go beyond self-regulation. He called for legislation to be passed in Congress.

In a taped interview on NBC's 'Meet the Press' program, Gates said, "You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like. And that has to be a required thing." "No one thinks self-regulation is enough," he added.

The first known case of an AI agent going rogue was announced by tech giant OpenAI in July this year. The rogue AI agent hacked into the website of another company, Hugging Face. This led to the rise in the calls for guardrails in AI development by industry experts.
