A University of Miami student is facing charges after police said he allegedly put a hidden camera in his roommate’s room.
Dylan Hugh Long, 21, was arrested Tuesday on charges of video voyeurism and burglary, an arrest report said.
According to the report, the victim said he found a hidden camera device emitting a blue light inside his nightstand in his bedroom at an off-campus home in South Miami.
He confronted his roommate, Long, who denied any involvement with the device, the report said.
The victim was able to access the files on the device and found multiple videos showing Long operating and testing the device before it was placed in the nightstand, the report said.
Long later admitted to his roommate that the camera belonged to him and that he had placed it in the bedroom, saying he put it there because the victim hadn’t responded to his text messages the report said.
Police went to UM’s campus in Coral Gables where Long was detained.
Long admitted to placing the camera in his roommate’s bedroom without his knowledge because he wanted to confirm his roommate was reading his text messages, the report said.
He was arrested and booked into jail before appearing in bond court on Wednesday.
His defense attorney said Long has no arrest history and said it was an argument between roommates that “turned a little different.”
Long was ordered to stay away from the roommate and had his bond set at $3,500.
Online records show Long is a senior and a political science and economics student at UM.
