Mainers can now show pride in some of their local sports teams while paying their highway tolls.
The Maine Turnpike Authority announced Wednesday that new $20 E-ZPass windshield sticker tags featuring the Boston Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs and Portland Hearts of Pine are now available.
The MTA announced in March that it was rolling out windshield stickers as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to hardcase transponders. Unbranded stickers cost $5 compared to the $15 hardcase device, and the stickers use RFID technology, eliminating the need for a battery while using less plastic.
However, unlike the traditional device, the stickers cannot be shared between vehicles.
The new $20 sports stickers provide an optional “creative and personal” touch for Maine drivers to consider, said MTA Executive Director Andre Briere.
“We are constantly looking for smart technology that can improve cost efficiency, reduce our environmental impact, and make travel easier,” Briere said in a written statement. “When we can pair those benefits with something creative and personal, it is a win for Maine drivers.”
All of the proceeds from Portland Hearts of Pine stickers will benefit the Hearts of Pine Foundation.
“Every Hearts tag represents more than team pride — it helps us expand access to soccer, invest in places to play, and create opportunities for young people to build a sense of belonging,” Kevin Schohl, president of the Portland Hearts of Pine, said in the news release.
MTA says it plans to provide more of these “community driven” collaborations with New England sports teams in the future, and also teased that Maine Mariners stickers will be coming soon.
The stickers are available to purchase at the E-ZPass office at 2360 Congress St. in Portland, as well as through maineturnpikeauthority.com.
The MTA also released a new Maine E-ZPass App this week, through which Mainers can purchase the stickers. The app is live for Android users and coming soon for Apple users.
