Multiple rounds of heavy rain possible this weekend, flash flood watch issued

Дата публикации: 18-09-2026 20:09:03

There likely won’t be a shortage of rain across the Chicago area this weekend, with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected through Sunday night, bringing the possibility of heavy downpours.
Rain chances will increase after midnight and continue through Saturday morning. A flood watch is in effect Friday night through Saturday morning for Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties in Illinois, along with Lake and Porter counties in northwest Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms may produce rainfall rates of up to two inches per hour, potentially leading to flash flooding.
Stormcast shows heavy rain arriving from the northwest overnight, with some gusty winds possible as the storms move in around sunrise.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said the greatest chance of heavy rain will be between 5 and 10 a.m., followed by on-and-off rain showers in the afternoon, though they’ll be lighter than in the morning.
Another round of heavy rain is possible Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rainfall that leads to flash flooding.
Even before sunrise, pockets of heavy rain are possible, with wet conditions expected to continue for several hours. On Sunday morning, some areas could experience over three inches of rain, depending on where these thunderstorms develop.
The afternoon will bring scattered showers and wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour.
For those planning ahead for the Bears and Vikings game at Soldier Field on Sunday, have your poncho ready to go. While there’s a good chance of rain in the morning, hopefully it will dry out in time for kickoff at noon.
However, fans might encounter some showers.
As for the day as a whole, highs will only reach the 60s, marking the first time this season temperatures have been that cool.
While rain will continue through much of the day, showers will get lighter and begin winding down on Sunday evening.
But the rain won’t be done at that point.
Jeanes said scattered on-and-off showers are also possible Monday, along with a couple of rumbles of thunder through the first half of the day.
A cool stretch of weather arrives on Tuesday as fall officially begins before drier conditions in the second half of the week heading into next weekend.
