Melania Trump has long cultivated a carefully measured White House image, but as Donald Trump dramatically reshapes the historic residence, her silence is becoming impossible to ignore.

On September 9, the First Lady of the United States hosted a group of historians to share the new look of the iconic White House Rose Garden.

“The White House stands as an architectural autobiography of America, embodying the enduring values of ambition, democracy, and civic life through its design, craftsmanship, and the objects within,” Melania told the guests from the White House Historical Association’s annual presidential sites summit, per the Office of the First Lady.

While the press release touted her contributions to the “design and construction of the White House Tennis Pavilion, the complete renovation of the Queen’s Bedroom and the Queen’s Bathroom, the conservation of the historic Zuber wall covering in the President’s Dining Room; and the 2020 restoration of the Rose Garden, which renewed its historic design while revamping infrastructure and accessibility,” it’s hard to ignore what the White House looks like right now.

In his second administration, Donald Trump has bulldozed the East Wing to make way for a ballroom, transformed the White House Rose Garden into a patio, and installed a granite helipad for Marine One.

One guest told CNN that it was hard to ignore the controversial changes to the historic building even though no one mentioned any of the projects during the visit.

“She is staking out her own reputation, and there was no even attempt to defend her husband. The silence was deafening,” the anonymous source said.

Melania has not publicly offered her opinion about Donald Trump’s vision for their Washington, D.C. home, but the president told reporters in March that she “doesn’t love” the sound of pile drivers.

The juxtaposition of the couple’s reaction to the White House renovations seems to reflect one thing, according to Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women.

She told CNN in March, “Watching the demolition is the physical embodiment of watching the first lady’s role become smaller and smaller. She’s making it clear that – like her husband – she’s not going to be like any other first lady. … She doesn’t care about historic precedent, either.”

For now, Melania’s carefully chosen words about preserving the White House’s legacy stand in stark contrast to the sweeping changes taking place around her. Her silence on Donald Trump’s renovations speaks louder than ever.
