Revenge is a dish best served at your own ballpark in front of 47,513 towel-waving lunatics.
A year after being knocked out of the National League Wild Card series at Wrigley Field, the Padres returned the favor by sweeping the Chicago Cubs out of the playoffs with a 4-1 win in Game 2, sending San Diego to the National League Division Series for the third time in five years.
The Padres offense scored two different ways, with small ball and very large ball.
Ty France led off the 2nd inning with a double and moved to 3rd base when Jackson Merrill legged out an infield single. Merrill stole 2nd base and on the very next pitch Xander Bogaerts shot a single through the right side to plate France with the first run of the game. Up next was Ethan Salas, who at the age of 20 became the youngest player ever to catch a Major League Baseball postseason game.
His first playoff at-bat was like he’s been here for a decade. Salas hit a liner to deep centerfield for a sacrifice fly to bring in Merrill and make it 2-0 San Diego. Their other runs came in the 4th inning. Xander Bogaerts led off with a double and when the Cubs replaced Kevin Gausman with Daniel Palencia, manager Craig Stammen sent in Gavin Sheets to pinch-hit.
Palencia unleashed a 101 MPH fastball and Sheets got the barrel to it.
The 394-foot missile left his bat at 107 MPH and sent an already juiced Petco Park crowd into a frenzy.
On the pitching side, Nick Pivetta got the start and aired out everything he had. Pivetta took a shutout into the 4th inning before giving up an RBI single to Nico Hoerner that cut the lead to 2-1. In the playoffs, that’s all the San Diego bullpen really needs.
