WASHINGTON, October 7. /TASS/. Iranian authorities should significantly reduce their uranium enrichment capacity in order to end the war with the United States, US Vice President JD Vance said in an interview with Reuters.

"If you don’t want a nuclear weapon, then why do you need 60% enriched fuel? And if you want to show commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, don’t build highly enriched fuel. That’s a very basic threshold issue [when ending the conflict]," Vance said. "I think if they want to show a commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, they would do something meaningful on their enrichment capacity."

He said the United States remained open to reaching an agreement but would demand concrete concessions from Iran in the nuclear sphere. "We’re not going to trade words for actions," the vice president said. In his view, the situation is complicated by the fact that Washington is unsure who makes decisions in Tehran. Vance said the United States was holding talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. However, he claimed, it was unclear how much influence they wield within Iran’s power structure. "One of the things we picked up on is it’s not totally clear how their country makes decisions," Vance said.

The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding envisaging an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, the United States resumed large-scale attacks on Iran overnight to July 8, having accused it of breaching the existing agreements in what concerned the Strait of Hormuz, a global chokepoint for approximately 25% of oil and some 20% of LNG supplies.

The Donald Trump administration recently signaled an end to any large-scale use of force against Iran and a transition to putting economic pressure on the Islamic Republic through sanctions instead.
