Causative factors explaining the rising prevalence of both pediatric neurodevelopmental disorders broadly and autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in particular continue to be hotly debated in the current political landscape in the US. A study published in 2019 reported that about 1 in 6 children (17%) aged 3 to 17 years were diagnosed with a range of developmental disabilities, as reported by parents, in a study window spanning 2009 to 2017. A 2023 study extracted data on 26 422 individuals aged 3 to 17 years included in the National Health Interview Survey from 2018 to 2021 and found a similar overall rate for a range of developmental disorders of 16.7%. When the focus is sharpened to ASDs in particular, trends in the US demonstrate an increasing prevalence. Approximately 1 in 31 children (3.2%) through age 8 years were identified with ASDs according to a 2022 estimate from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, an increase from the rate of 1 in 36 described in 2020.
