Notable deaths also include Seattle philanthropist Faye Sarkowsky, director Anthony Page and pop-punk musician Chad Gilbert.
Chris Spatola, 47, a popular ESPN college basketball analyst, died Monday.
Spatola called games and appeared in studio for ESPN for the last 13 years, bringing a unique perspective “shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” according to an ESPN statement.
The son-in-law of legendary former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Spatola had also worked as an assistant coach for the Blue Devils.
Presley Gerber, 27, a model and the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and entrepreneur Rande Gerber, died Sept. 20 at a rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles County.
He had been open about his struggles with mental health and substance abuse, starting a “Mental Health Mondays” series on Instagram to raise awareness and share wellness tips.
Gerber, who inherited his mother’s famous beauty mark, appeared alongside her in a Pepsi Super Bowl ad that paid homage to her 1992 Pepsi commercial. He also shot a campaign with his sister for Calvin Klein jeans.
Chad Gilbert, the lead guitarist and one of the founding members of pop-punk band New Found Glory, died Sept. 20 at age 45. No cause of death was given, but he had been open about his cancer battle over the past five years.
Gilbert had just celebrated his return to the stage in June after emergency surgery earlier this year to remove a brain tumor. His band was among those that helped define the second-wave pop-punk sound of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Anthony Page, 90, Tony-winning and Oscar-nominated director whose projects ranged from “A Doll’s House” onstage to the big screen’s “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden,” died Sept. 11 in London.
Page was instrumental in getting the theater industry hooked on playwright Samuel Beckett, reviving “Waiting for Godot” first in Britain and then famously on Broadway in 2009.
KL Shannon, 59, who embodied social justice in Seattle as an organizer, activist and community leader, died Sept. 9 of cancer.
In a short UW student film about her, Shannon recalled being 13 and seeing a 16-year-old neighbor face police who had their guns drawn after he tried to get into his own house. After an altercation with police to protect her neighbor, Shannon was arrested. Even at 13, she said in the film, “I could not just stand by and not say anything.”
Shannon went on to join numerous organizations and movements to advance racial, economic and environmental justice and to make systems more accountable. Long before “intersectionality” became part of our common language, she believed that all social justice efforts were her fight, too, a fellow activist said.
Faye Sarkowsky, 92, Seattle philanthropist, arts lover and leader who helped bring the Seahawks to Seattle, died Aug. 27.
Sarkowsky volunteered, organized and fundraised for organizations across the city and country, including Temple De Hirsch Sinai, Seattle Art Museum, The 5th Avenue Theatre and Seattle Children’s hospital.
She was also a matchmaker, introducing Bill Gates Sr. to his future wife, Mimi, who said Sarkowsky “took a joy in life which was absolutely contagious.”
