Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle according to NFL Network after hauling in a 55-yard completion from Patrick Mahomes with 3:25 to play in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
Thornton was tackled from behind by rookie Treydan Stukes at the 5-yard line. He tried to stand up and immediately dropped to the turf.
Several players from both teams looked on with pained expressions as medical personnel tended to the injured Thornton.
He eventually left the game on a cart.
“His ankle doesn’t look good, but he’s going to fly back with us and we’ll get further evaluation,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the game.
The Raiders led the Chiefs 19-17 with 3:25 remaining in the game at the time of the injury.
Kansas City scored two touchdowns in the next 0:25 of game time to take control of the game.
Reid says he was proud of the team’s response after going through such an emotional moment.
“That’s a rough one when your teammate, especially a guy like Tyquan who’s a great husband and a great father, has that happen,” Reid said. “Just his attitude is unbelievable. He’s great for the team and kind of a leader of that group. For that to happen, especially with the phenomenal year he’s having and on a great play to boot, it’s a tough one to see for all the guys.
Thornton had five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his season cut short by a knee injury last season and was one of the first players to speak to Thornton after the injury as he received medical attention.
“It’s tough,” he said. “Those guys put in so much work and I was in that spot last year. You work so hard to play the game you love, and one play can change your season. So for him, you hope for the best. But at the same time you want to show him support because I know how it is when you’re in that position. You feel like the world is closing in on you and you want to make sure you have support.
“He knows we’re in his corner. He’s one of the best teammates I’ve ever had. He really is. He knows he has us behind him.”
