rfig is an open-source Rust utility that adds IDE-style terminal autocomplete to zsh, Bash and Fish on macOS and Linux. It is a Fig-inspired project for developers looking for an open-source Fig alternative, with command menus and inline history suggestions in their existing shell.
Candidates appear while typing. Arrow keys browse the menu; Right inserts the selected candidate and lets you continue to the next argument. With an available completion definition, that can mean subcommands, repository branches or other values that depend on the current environment.
There are two separate sources of suggestions:
The menu follows the text you actually typed.
Inline history-based autosuggestions match the typed prefix and current working directory.
For example, typing gi can show a command menu while an inline suggestion offers a previously used git checkout main. The menu still follows gi. Ctrl+E accepts the history suggestion; Enter executes the full suggestion when one is present, or the typed command otherwise. Enter does not accept the highlighted menu item.
Some implementation details that may interest Rust developers:
zsh uses ZLE; Bash and Fish share a Rust editing layer, while commands still execute in the current shell.
Completion comes from available shell definitions, installed scripts, recognized generators and protocols, with cached help-derived candidates as a fallback.
Setup scans PATH and common completion directories. Eligible commands can be analyzed sequentially in a sandbox after setup.
History is directory-scoped, and candidate selections and executions influence local ranking.
Current support is zsh, Bash 4.4+ and Fish 3.6+. Completion coverage depends on the sources installed on the machine; rfig does not guarantee candidates for every command. It is independent of Fig.
To try it through Homebrew:
brew install tamia6/tap/rfig
rfig setup
Open a new shell session afterward. Source and prebuilt binary installation instructions are in the README.

Feedback on the shell integration, terminal rendering and completion-source approach would be welcome.
