To survive in the world of hip-hop is to always stay hungry, sometimes literally when it comes to collaborating alongside one of the premiere fast food chains in America.

Atlanta rap icons Outkast recently went live with a new collaboration in partnership with beloved 24/7 diner, Waffle House. From fly merch to a few kitchen essentials, the joint venture of two legendary brands in the South and Midwest proved to be a savory union.

Launched earlier today (October 2), the collaboration has brought fans of both entities together in droves with hopes of getting their hands on the limited edition items. According to USA Today, the Waffle House in Downton Atlanta where the drop is being hosted was packed for hours ahead of the 11AM launch time. Included in the merch set are t-shirts, hoodies, bomber jackets, bucket hats, socks and coffee mugs. As an added treat, a handful of free souvenir menus were also given out to those who made it inside the Waffle House to feast on limited-edition André 3000 and Big Boi meals. As one fan told the outlet while standing in line, “When I think about what OutKast did for the music industry, they not only helped it grow by bringing more visibility to southern rappers, but they also innovated by bringing in their own flavor, their own style, which then made more people everywhere feel like that they could embrace more of their authentic selves in the rap industry.”

It’s a sentiment that makes it quite obvious as to why these type of collaborations are so frequent. Hip-hop artists have become powerful voices in fashion, sports, entertainment, and lifestyle, and food is a natural extension of that cultural influence. Artists often build strong personal identities and loyal fan communities, so partnering with a food brand allows them to bring that identity into an everyday experience. Whether it’s a signature flavor, limited-edition product, or branded menu item, the collaboration can give fans a tangible way to connect with an artist they follow and admire.

Not all make for the right recipe though. A collaboration can be less convincing when there is little apparent connection between the artist’s public identity and the food product. If the partnership feels purely transactional, fans might have less reason to engage with it beyond the initial announcement. What seemed like a good mix at the time can in some cases leave a bad aftertaste.

Often looked at as the one that started the trend, Travis Scott really launched a movement in 2020 with his Micky D’s deal.

WORST: Mary J. Blige x Burger King

Her reign as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul remains, but this union was anything but harmonious.

BEST: Flavor Flav x Red Lobster

Those who got to enjoy the “Flavor Flav’s Faves” secret menu know how valid this collaboration proved to be.

WORST: Snoop Dogg x Hot Pockets

Unfortunately this partnership came with a side of cringe.

BEST: Megan Thee Stallion x Popeye’s

From ownership and input on product creation to a merch drop and philanthropic opportunities, this was a boss move for Megan.

WORST: Nelly x Burger King

While the push towards fresher ingredients was respectable, this was clearly Burger King’s attempt to rework what McDonald’s pulled off a year prior.

BEST: Pusha T x Arby’s

Giving beef a whole new meaning, Pusha T didn’t hold back in bringing bars straight towards The Golden Arches. Respect!

WORST: Cardi B & Offset x McDonald’s

Although sweet at the time, this one simply didn’t age well.

BEST: Doja Cat x Taco Bell

She helped bring back the Mexican Pizza — what else is there to say!

WORST: Jack Harlow x Kentucky Fried Chicken

Points for being a hometown hero, but it’s hard taking this one seriously in retrospect to the Monica memes.
