UNLV women’s soccer coach Kacey Bingham is back home at the moment while her son, Theo, plays in the Little League World Series with Paseo Verde.
It has been an eventful eight months for the Bingham family.
Kacey Bingham was named the eighth coach in UNLV women’s soccer history in December following a seven-year run as the coach at Western Oregon.
Bingham and her husband, Kyle, moved to Southern Nevada and got their two youngest sons signed up for sports.
That included getting 12-year-old Theo signed up for Little League.
In a matter of months, Theo went from training with a club team and his Little League team, to being a center fielder on the Paseo Verde Little League team that will represent Nevada in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Paseo Verde opens its tournament Thursday against West Side Little League from Hamilton, Ohio.
“He’s really excited about it,” Kacey Bingham said. “He’s so excited to be there.”
Nevada is taking part in the Little League World Series for the fourth straight year. It’s the second time in three years Paseo Verde is in the tournament.
Theo — one of the Bingham’s four sons — will have Kyle in the stands cheering him on.
It’s a bit trickier for the first-year UNLV coach.
It wasn’t in the initial plans for Kacey Bingham to fly to Williamsport just as she was beginning her first season with the Rebels.
UNLV won its first game under Bingham in a 1-0 home win over Portland State on Sunday.
Once it became possible that Theo might play in the Little League World Series, taking time away from her new team would likely be in the cards.
Bingham had discussions with UNLV athletic director Erick Harper, with Harper given full support for Bingham to take leave if Paseo Verde makes a deep tournament run.
UNLV plays UC San Diego at home Thursday, but follows with two road games against California Baptist on Sunday and Idaho State on Aug. 27.
Paseo Verde’s next game would be Saturday if they lose and Sunday if they win.
Harper told Bingham that when it comes to family, there’s no question.
“He’s mentioned that he’ll support me if I choose to go out and be a part of things,” Bingham said. “I think, right now, we’re just playing it day by day and seeing how he’s doing, how the team’s doing, and make those decisions as they come.”
Theo, however, will not play Thursday due to an illness, Bingham said. Paseo Verde manager Cory Edwards said he is day to day.
Edwards said the first thought that jumped out regarding Theo was he was a new kid unfamiliar to the league.
A lefty, Theo looked athletic. When Edwards coached against him, he was even more surprised.
“I was like, ‘Who is this kid, and where did he come from?’” Edwards said. “Also, why didn’t I pick him? He seemed to be athletic enough to be part of anybody’s team.”
Edwards said Theo has a quiet personality. Players can get overlooked when they’re not as outgoing.
His name kept coming up whenever Edwards and coaches would tally nominations for the Paseo Verde roster. Coach Lynn Cowley would tell Edwards that the more he’s around Theo, the more he liked him.
“I was a quiet baseball player. My effort on the field and how I executed was how I spoke,” Edwards said. “That’s what I kind of liked about Theo.”
It has been a juggling act with the Binghams adjusting to a new life in Las Vegas, Kacey Bingham coaching a Division I soccer team and now watching their son play in the highest-profile tournament imaginable.
They’re taking it one day at a time, she said.
“We have a paper in his room that he made two years ago that said, ‘My goal is to make it to the Little League World Series,’” Bingham said. “It’s something he’s dreamed about and worked for for a long time.”
