Truck and Tipper Sales Rise 34 Percent in September on Mining Demand and Fleet Modernisation: IFTRT

Дата публикации: 01-10-2026 19:57:54

Commercial truck and tipper sales across India rose 33.6% month-on-month to 44,323 units in September 2026 according to an analysis released by the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT).
Rising from a base of 33,956 units in August, the monthly volume expansion was led by a sharp recovery in mining and infrastructure haulage alongside structured fleet additions by large contractual logistics operators. However, this comes as small transport operators face continued financial stress and weak asset utilisation.
Mining Belts Drive Tipper Surge
Segment-wise data showed heavy commercial vehicle tipper sales recording the steepest growth, surging 56% month-on-month to 8,567 units in September from 5,486 units in August.
The report noted that the sharp increase in tipper demand reflects heightened domestic coal and mineral transportation across mining belts in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
In the cargo category, heavy commercial vehicle cargo truck volumes rose to 17,533 units from 13,686 units in August. Medium commercial vehicle dispatches reached 6,433 units, while light and intermediate commercial vehicle sales expanded to 11,790 units compared to 9,525 units in the preceding month.
Freight Formalisation
The analysis highlights that commercial vehicle procurement is being reshaped by the rapid formalisation of freight movement. Long-term contractual freight, which previously accounted for 8% to 10% of road freight before the pandemic, has expanded to represent 25% to 30% of domestic logistics activity.
Large manufacturing enterprises, retail networks, gas distributors, and e-commerce companies increasingly mandate long-term freight commitments, prompting large fleet operators to purchase covered-body fabricated containers and intermediate commercial vehicles in the 7.5-tonne to 18.5-tonne categories for medium-haul hub-and-spoke distribution.
Organised Fleet Scale vs Small Operator Stress
According to the research body, organized fleet operators and common carriers account for approximately 8% to 10% of the broader freight transport ecosystem, yet they drive an estimated 65% to 70% of new vehicle purchases for fleet expansion.
In contrast, small and fragmented operators who own limited vehicles remain largely dependent on unpredictable spot markets, dealing with lower utilization and informal debt.
