After all, between its scissor-lift-like construction and its push-button operation, it packed some groundbreaking appeal.

As it turns out, that wasn’t the only one of such designs that Wild Land and Cinch Outdoors will soon be offering.

A trunk for your truck

There’s another called the PickupMate Trunk, and it takes a slightly different beat. Rather than rising straight upward like the Wingman, it hinges and split-folds to form a slick dual-level living space.

The multidirectional pivot means it rises both over the cab and also over the tailgate, turning the truck’s bed into both a ground floor and a standing-room area. Once again, an electro-actuated frame makes setup automatic and effortless.

When deployed, the Trunk’s construction results in a highly spacious abode. According to Wild Land’s website, it measures 70.1 × 45.7 × 30.3 inches throughout the first level and 118.1 × 57.1 × 46.1 inches on the second.

While the dedicated sleeping quarters are positioned up top, this means the base can sleep a third or serve as a standalone storage and living space. Wild Land’s wraparound coverage takes full advantage of the available truck bed for the floor plan.

It makes for an accommodating setup, as the opening to the second story provides up to nine feet of headroom.

Your mobile base camp

Toward that end, I think a lot of the potential for the Trunk comes from its modularity and ability to reconfigure to suit owners’ needs.

For instance, because it mounts to the top of pickup beds like a conventional topper, you can still store gear underneath. In contrast to a hard-shell conversion, you can still have some vacant room for hauling things.

What’s more, it features an independent lifting operation. In practice, this means the first level can be deployed on its own to provide a partial shelter with 55 inches of clearance for relaxing, sitting and organizing your gear.

However, I’d imagine that you’d want to keep that second level expanded whenever possible. Thanks to its extended platform, Wild Land has created a dedicated viewing deck that opens up to allow for activities like stargazing and birding.

Add to that a host of standard features like integrated audio and lighting, and options like a ladder, a 270-degree awning and a side shower tent sweeten it further.

Availability and pricing

The PickupMate Trunk is available to pre-order on the Wild Land US storefront for $9,099, though Cinch Outdoors lists it with a potentially lower launch price of $8,499. You can learn more on the Wild Land and Cinch Outdoors websites.
