Wren, the New York-based microbrand from Wrist Enthusiast founder Craig Karger, is an affordable dive watch brand.

Since its founding in 2024, Wren has only ever made dive watches. Exceedingly good dive watches with absurd specs lists, great designs and unfathomably low prices.

To adapt a slogan from legendary apparel brand Fubu, Wren makes watches for enthusiasts, by enthusiasts. So when it came time for the brand to launch its first non-diver sports watch, Wren did what Wren does: it came up with something unique that would attract enthusiasts, stuffed it to the gills with specs, and offered it at a lower price than expected.

And that’s how we ended up with the new Wren Vessel.

Launching today, the Vessel is Wren’s take on an integrated sports watch. But unlike virtually every other watch in the genre, the brand isn’t trying to emulate a Gerald Gènta design from 50 years ago. Instead, it’s looking forward to create something unfamiliar. As Wren says, the Vessel is designed for 2075, not 1975.

To bring his futuristic vision to life, Wren tapped British watch designer Max Resnick, whose previous credits include such acclaimed indie watches as the Anoma A1, the VPC Type 39VM and the Traska Chronograph.

At the heart of the Vessel’s design, uniquely is the sapphire crystal. It’s extremely complex, costs more to produce than the watch’s movement and is the most difficult component Wren’s ever worked with.

The reason for all of that is its bizarre structure. The sapphire is rounded on both sides, and even more impressively, it’s faceted on both sides. Faceted watch crystals are rare to begin with, but by faceting this one on both sides, Wren has created a shaped crystal that doesn’t actually distort the dial.

The 39mm x 39mm x 10.6mm case and integrated bracelet are both made of 904L stainless steel and were effectively built around the crystal, making them appear to flow out of it. That includes a three-part case with a sunken middle section and a tapering bracelet with a microadjustment system built into the links rather than the clasp.

Both the case and bracelet feature a mix of brushed and polished finishes with lines that continue the design of the crystal for a cohesive look. The bracelet also boasts a proprietary new push-button quick-release system that allows you to easily swap it out for a rubber strap. The strap is not included with the watch, but can be added for an additional $195.

The dial of the watch is sparse, with only the “Wren” word mark appearing below 12:00. The lumed indices show up on the minute track, which is on the watch’s rehaut. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands are also lumed, while the seconds hand is fully painted in aqua, the color used for Wren’s first-ever watch.

The signature aqua color continues on the custom turbine-like rotor, which is visible through a sapphire caseback. The rotor winds a Swiss-made Sellita Calibre SW300-1 automatic movement, which beats at 4Hz with a power reserve of 56 hours.

Availability and pricing

The Vessel is Wren’s most expensive watch yet, and it’s a little beyond the realm of what I would categorize as “affordable.” But for this type of custom design, the quality of the specs and materials used, and the difficulty of machining the crystal, the watch still feels like an excellent bargain. It could easily cost twice what it does.

The Vessel launches in two colorways: one with a sunray silver dial for $2,900, and the other with a meteorite dial for $3,400. Both are limited to 150 pieces each and are available to preorder now on Wren’s website.
