The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted 1,201.83 kilogrammes of suspected illicit drugs worth N3.674bn in two 40-foot containers at the port.

The seized substances included cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, as well as Cannabis Indica, concealed among used vehicles and automobile spare parts.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Joe Anani, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing, saying the seizures were made on September 2 and 16, 2026, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Anani said the first container, numbered MSDU655132/0, was intercepted on September 2. A joint physical examination by officers of both agencies uncovered 890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies weighing 598.08 kilogrammes.

The container also carried a 2008 Mercedes-Benz and a 2012 Nissan Infiniti, he said.

The second container, numbered SKU625643/6, was intercepted on September 16, yielding 1,207 packages of Cannabis Indica weighing 603.75 kilogrammes.

According to Anani, the container also contained two used Toyota Sienna vehicles, two Toyota Corolla cars and used engine spare parts.

He said the concealment of the substances among vehicles and automobile components demonstrated how smugglers exploited legitimate cargo movements to import prohibited goods into the country.

Anani said the seized drugs would be handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and necessary action.

He commended officers of both agencies for their vigilance and cooperation, adding that the command would intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering and cargo examinations to prevent the importation of illicit substances.

The controller urged importers, licensed customs agents and freight forwarders to comply with import regulations, warning against the use of legitimate trade channels to facilitate criminal activities.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA Commander at Tin Can Island Port, Solomon Gbadebo Omotoso, warned about the dangers posed by cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, particularly to children and unsuspecting consumers who might consume them without knowing they contained cannabis.

Omotoso also cautioned against the importation of the products, alleging that similar items were being sold in nightclubs.

"These cookies are very potent, and these are the kinds of products being sold in nightclubs. I warn individuals involved in their importation that we will not allow such dangerous items into the country," he said.
